WALK is country, folk, bluegrass, blues, gospel and hip-hop. Different, gospel-flavored, yearning and mournful
Review from the Biloxi-Gulfport South Miss Sun Herald
‘WALK’ Red Rooster (Wondermore Records)
This September CD is truly different than most we’ve heard lately. Red Rooster leaders Jay Erickson (vocals) and Nat Zilkha (lead guitar) are lifelong friends who combine their influences along with their “folk collective” to make music combining country, folk, bluegrass, blues, gospel and hip-hop. Other members include Susannah Hornsby (vocals/accordion), Andrew Green (banjo), Dave Gould (sax), Brandon Doyle (French horn), Pete Nilsson (keyboards), Daniel Engelmann (bass) and Lucas Ives (drums).
Yearning alt-country vocals occasionally strive with samples and loops, but most times, things work out fine. Highlights include the gospel-flavored “Satisfied Mind,” the loopy-seeming “The Places in Between” and the mournful “Raining in Los Angeles.”
Broad-minded fans of any of the aforementioned genres should enjoy this recording.
