Watch Sturgill Simpson Perform a Fiery Set on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Sturgill Simpson graced the set of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend with two high energy performances. The outlaw country singer and his brass-heavy band played “Keep it Between the Lines” and “Call to Arms,” both cuts from his latest Grammy-nominated record, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.
By watching the clips, you can tell that Simpson has definitely found his place on stage, lending some spirited dancing and guitar slinging to a stunned audience. On “Call to Arms,” keys man Bobby Emmett gives the organ the ride of its life (by literally riding on it), and Simpson shreds his Telecaster with devilish intentions (which he delightfully smashes at the end of the song). For many a rock audience, smashing your guitar has come a long way since Pete Townshend sent his axes to the grave. You could say, now, that the act is pretty cliche. That’s not the case though in roots music. Smashing your six-string is a shocking act and another reason why Simpson’s live performances are a must-see
