In Mystery Train, Greil Marcus claims the origins of rock n’ roll “can be heard every time a rocker’s secret smile breaks open.” I agree. Good music has humor or hilarity. Even if morose or dark, a good song makes me smile, by the shear revelation or confession of the writer or performer. In Sturgill Simpson’s new song “You Can Have the Crown,” these lines had me grinning:
“Well now Lord if you can hear me won’t you throw a damn dog a bone
Cause if the Devil shows up with a better deal this old soul’s going down
I sing ’em real pretty I sing ’em real sad
All the people in the crowd say he ain’t half bad
They call me King Turd up here on Shit Mountain but if you want it you can have the crown”
1. When was the last time music got you happy?
*P.S. It must be said that I originally misheard the lyric as: “…you can call me King Turd or Darryl Shit Mountain…” Hee-heh, I chuckled, good one, “Darryl Shit Mountain”. What a funny folkism. Sometimes it’s the words we hear that are funny.
