Past, Present, and Future
This week’s releases offer a nice blend of the cutting edge and the foundations of roots music, and we can’t get enough of either one. On the cutting edge end of things, we’ve got new music from the Milk Carton Kids, who’ve weathered some life changes but are still standing to tell us — in their beautiful way — what they see around them. My Morning Jacket’s Jim James similarly takes his own style to new realms, with new observations and new sounds. But the new releases stack also takes us back to some unreleased songs from Theotis Taylor, offers an appreciation for groundbreaking mandolinist John Duffey, and gives an overview of the songs and influence of Buffalo Springfield.
Whether you want to fire up your wayback machine or leap forward into the future, there’s plenty for your ears. Go find something new (to you)!
