So Many Musical Thompsons
At last, my final entry from the summer travels. As I referenced earlier, I got to see Richard Thompson performing at a nice little venue called The Stables (near and dear to Brit jazzers, from what I was told) in scenic Milton Keynes while I was in England in July. It was a classic solo Thompson gig. But, there was just one twist, the August Richard Thompson, late of O.B.E. (I guess I should say Order of the Bristish Empire, since this might be seen as more a, you know, americana hang out) and honorary doctorates and what not, was joined for all three encores by the youngest of his brood, Jack Thompson. Jack had shared the stage once before with his father, at the McCabe anniversary show earlier in the summer. Thin as a rail, with long dark hair, and decidedly non-folky rings through either side of his lower lip, the younger Thompson might have been seen to take to the stage a wee bit shyly. But, he stepped right up with his Martin bass and did himself proud, including playing on some new material. The discussion of Norwegian metal was added bonus.
Yes, new songs my freinds… I wonder what is in the air next for la familglia del Thompson? I await with bated breath. I know. You knew that already.
